Advanced Settings: Add Categories

Learn how to add a Category Frontend App, followed by adding Categories and Subcategories

First you need to add a Category Frontend App that will contain your categories and subcategories.

To add a Category Frontend App:

  1. Go to CMS (Content Management System) in the top menu and then choose Frontend Apps from the dropdown list.
  2. In the upper right, click on the blue button that says Add New Frontend App Instance to start creating your frontend app.
  3. Now you will need to select the type of frontend app.  For a new Category Block (you can have multiple styles of Category Blocks in different places at the same time), choose Category Navigation and click on Continue.
  4. Give your frontend app a name and give it a sort order of 1 to make it the first to display the same block area, if you will be adding more frontend apps.
  5. Next, choose the layout.  Click the green Add Layout Update button. A new menu will appear–select All Pages from that dropdown menu to show your categories on each page of your auction site.
  6. Another dropdown menu will appear–you will see many block options. The best blocks to choose from are Top Navigation Bar (that puts the categories right above your content) or Left Column (this will put the categories just below your Organization Profile information).
  7. Scroll up. Select Frontend App Options from the left menu.
  8. Choose the style of Category Block from the dropdown menu. If you chose to put your categories in the Top Navigation Bar (step 6), choose Horizontal Menu. If you chose to put them in the Left Column, choose one of the vertical options, Simple Vertical or Vertical Menu.
  9. Click the green Save App button in the upper right.

Now you can add your Categories and Subcategories, which will display in the Category Frontend App you just created.

To add a category:

  1. Go to Catalog in the upper menu and select Manage Categories from the dropdown menu.
  2. Give your new Category a Name–this can be anything that applies to the products you will be adding or it can be a general parent category, like View All, that will hold all of your products.
  3. Toggle the Is Active menu to Yes.
  4. Choose a Page Layout, only if you don’t like the default layout, which is 3 Columns. From the dropdown list, Empty will be a blank page with no navigation, your products will fill the whole page. 1 Column will span the 3 available columns, leaving no room for static blocks on either side. 2 Columns Left will place your products in the 2 right columns, leaving the column on the left column open for static blocks. 2 Columns Right will place your products in the 2 left columns and leave the right column open for static blocks. 3 Columns will place your products in the middle of the 3 available columns, leaving both the left and right columns open for static blocks.
  5. Click on the green Save Category button in the upper right.

To add a subcategory:

  1. Go to Catalog in the upper menu and select Manage Categories from the dropdown menu.
  2. Select the Category you wish to be the parent category.
  3. Click on the blue Add Subcategory button in the upper left.
  4. Give your new Category a Name–this can be anything that applies to the products you will be adding or it can be a general parent category, like View All, that will hold all of your products.
  5. Toggle the Is Active menu to Yes.
  7. Click on the green Save Category button in the upper right.

Now you should be able to see your categories displayed in the block of your choice. You can continue to change the location of your categories by playing with the settings of the existing Fronted Apps you have created.  These changes can be made throughout your auction.
